Hiking in the Salzkammergut

Hikes around Lake Mondsee for families and active holidaymakers

Whether on the mountain, along the lakeshore or with the family in the woods, in Mondseeland you will find over 150 kilometres of natural hiking trails. A voyage of discovery around Lake Mondsee will make your holiday in Upper Austria an experience that you will remember for a long time to come.

From Mondsee to the mountains

The extensive hiking trails in Mondsee are a welcome change for holidaymakers in the region, especially in summer. The different levels of difficulty of the 150 kilometres of routes make your hikes in the Salzkammergut even more varied.

Helenenweg - adventure hike in Mondsee

The Helenenweg hiking trail is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Salzkammergut. You start directly in the centre of Mondsee and then walk along the Zeller Ache to the Erlachmühle, a snack station that is open from May to September. After a hearty snack, you have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the mill. You can experience at first hand how grain was processed into flour decades ago with the help of sophisticated water wheel systems. On the way there, you will hike through a mixed forest. The rustling of the leaves, the gurgling of the stream and the mill in the forest make this short hike in Mondsee a fantastic experience.

Dragonwall hike

From the summit cross of the Dragonwall you can see almost the entire Salzkammergut. How do you get to this impressive view? First and foremost with a good level of fitness, sure-footedness and plenty of hiking experience. Your tour starts in St. Lorenz at the foot of the Drachenwand on the moderately difficult route (60%B, 40%C). The highlight and most challenging part of the route is the Franzosenschanze with its suspension bridge on the Drachenwand via ferrata. You cross the 25 metre long bridge 250 metres above the ground. Here you can only put one step in front of the other, as the bridge is relatively narrow and wobbly with its steel cables at shoulder height.

You will be rewarded with a view that could not be more spectacular. Numerous lakes and peaks are visible from here. Enjoy the panorama, take a good rest and then descend again along marked paths. This tour is not only an adventure hike in Mondsee, but also a tough mountain tour that is really only for mountain enthusiasts.

Hike up the Koloman's hill

Between the Mondsee and the Irrsee is the Koloman's hill with an Austrian rarity: a wooden church. The Koloman's church is the oldest wooden church in Austria, which you reach after a climb of over an hour from Gasthof Hochserner at Lake Irrsee. Next to the church, a magical view over both lakes awaits you. After a short rest, the hiking trail leads back along almost the same route, turning right once at a small crossroads and continuing to the Kolomanstaferl. Finally, you return to the starting point via the Hausstätter Graben and the Schusterberg. The hiking tour in the Salzkammergut takes just over two hours and covers a distance of five kilometres and around 600 metres in altitude.

Easy hikes in Mondsee for families and children

The hiking route directly from the Bergergut up to the Hochplettspitz at 1134 metres is ideal for a hike with the family in Mondsee at just under 16 kilometres and a good 4 hours. Your children can enjoy the diversity of nature and romp around on the paths through the woods.

Hut hikes and savoury cuisine in the Salzkammergut

The mountain innkeepers welcome you to the huts and mountain pastures with their typical hospitality and rustic flair. There you will be spoilt with culinary delicacies and a cool beer and can simply relax in the sun.
